VP of Academic Life Position Description

  • Be a present, active, and contributory voice in all SGA Executive and Full Cabinet meetings; you have an important and valuable perspective to add to those proceedings.
  • Help plan and execute all SGA events.
  • Voice any concerns you are consistently hearing from students before the SGA Cabinet.
  • Coordinate and oversee all on-campus elections (such as those for class councils and the SGA Executive Cabinet itself), and create and distribute all surveys requested by SGA. 
  • Serve as a member of the Student Academic Life Council, the Student Assessment and Learning Committee, the University Academic Council, the Institutional Effectiveness Committee, and any other council as appointed.
    • Student Academic Life Council: Meets twice every year, once before the Fall semester begins, and once before the Spring semester, to review the appeals of students who have been academically dismissed.
    • Student Assessment and Learning Committee: Reviews the results and efficacy of university assessment systems such as Junior/Senior testing.
    • University Academic Council: Meets to vote on changes to University curriculum across all departments and majors.
    • Institutional Effectiveness Committee: Coordinate, organize, and receive all non-academic University Self-Assessments.
  • Oversee all the academic clubs operating on campus and ensure that they both have all the resources they need to be successful and are acting as responsible stewards of the resources they do have.
  • Coordinate Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week at least once a year (typically in the Spring semester).  This is your opportunity to be creative; this week is what you make it!
  • Communicate with the Director of Student Life twice a semester (once at midterms and once after finals to ensure that all SGA members are maintaining their GPA at or above the minimum level required for their positions.
  • Help execute the annual Club Rush event, at which all student organizations present themselves to the student body and solicit new members.
  • (Optional) Plan and execute events designed to enrich the academic lives of MVNU students.  Another opportunity to be creative!
  • Meet and collaborate with the Provost (currently Dr. Barney Cochran, Vice President for Academic Affairs) on an as needed basis, to handle student concerns relating to the current academic curriculum or practices.
  • Serve as a Student Marshal for the spring commencement ceremony.
    • Largely means you proceed in with the graduates, and stand in the aisle as each row moves to the stage to receive their diplomas, so they know to which row they are to return.
  • Support and attend all SGA sponsored events.
  • Follow the SGA Constitution and by-laws.
  • Keep a notebook, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. with all activity planning information and important notes for the benefit of the next VP of Academic Life.
  • Be in the SGA Lounge at least 5 hours a week, preferably 2 of which are in the evening.
